Chapter 56: The table for the superior and community guests

The superior's table should always be with the guests and pilgrims. (From Ch. 56 of Saint Benedict's Rule, trans. by Patrick Barry, OSB, 1997.)

For me, this is a beautiful metaphor for expansion of being -- keeping the highest me accessible to what is the highest in others, especially in grace-filled and unexpected ways.

  1. Again to listen, to hear, truly hear, and to respond to the person before me with love, care, concern, and respect, Benedict keeps reminding me as he does in this chapter. The "superior's table" is really the life of the Spirit within me. The Spirit is always lavish and not meager, open and not closed, inclusive rather than exclusive. This simple chapter asks me to reflect on my heart and allow the Spirit to work freely within me.
