Prologue to The Rule (paragraph 5)

And so now to prepare ourselves for the journey before us let us renew our faith and set ourselves high standards by which to lead our lives. (From para. 5 of Prologue to The Rule of Saint Benedict's Rule, trans. by Patrick Barry, OSB, 1997.)

I can't think of any higher standard than living in the unitive consciousness of love. It's a standard to which I will fall short, and remember only intermittently. But it's the same love in which I aspire to live that is already sustaining me.

  1. . "By the grace of God I am what I am", says the Rule, citing St Paul (1Cor 15:10). Yesterday the orthopedist told me an MRI and an x-Ray reveal, that, like every 80 year old, my spine and all my bones are degenerating. I have several compression fractures of my spine but my chronic pain, however, results from "normal" osteoarthritic bone degeneration. He told me that 100 out of 100 people my age he examines will show similar degeneration. So, Abba, by your grace And only by your grace I am what I am for one more day. Let's you and I enjoy it together!
