Chapter 45: Mistakes in the Oratory

  1. “The oratory” and “the table” represent for me prayer and life in community. The Work of God, God’s work in me, happens in daily prayer and in daily relationships, and one flows from the other and back into the other. They are so interconnected. I can see why Benedict brings them together in this chapter.

What Benedict requests then is some awareness of a fault made at prayer and in community and that awareness is not enough. In Chapter 45, he goes onto say that more “severe punishment” might be needed “for failing to correct by humility the wrong committed through negligence”(RB 45.2).
